Commercial water meters cannot distinguish water from air — they measure volume. Every day, pressure fluctuations in municipal water mains fold air pockets into the supply line through cavitation, hydrant activity, and main breaks.
When that pressurized water reaches your property's service connection, it enters a smaller pipe. Pressure drops. Those compressed air pockets expand to three or four times their original size, right before the meter. The meter counts every cubic inch — water or air — and your utility bills you for all of it. In many municipalities, the same inflated reading can affect both the water charge and the sewer charge; local billing methods vary.
The Smart Valve™ is a passive back-pressure device manufactured by Flow Dynamics and distributed in the United States by American Water Savings. A licensed plumber installs it directly after the water meter — on the customer side of the meter, before the first isolation valve — in a single brief water shutdown.
Once installed, the Smart Valve™ holds calibrated back pressure in the short zone between itself and the meter. This back pressure keeps entrained air compressed to its true, small volume as it crosses the billing point.
The meter records what's actually there — compressed air — instead of expanded air pockets registering as water you never received. The pressure your taps and fixtures experience is unchanged. Tenants, guests, and patients receive identical water service. The only measurable difference is what the meter records.
Smart Valve™ also absorbs pressure surges from the municipal supply. These surges push meters beyond their rated accuracy range, causing phantom over-readings, and stress pipe joints and gaskets in the building plumbing.
By steadying flow before it reaches the meter, the valve keeps measurement accurate throughout the billing cycle. The mechanism is externally adjustable — a fingertip dial is set to your specific line pressure during installation and then sealed.
